You’re not alone in wondering what counselling is actually like.
Maybe life’s felt a bit off lately. Maybe you’ve been feeling anxious, low, stressed — or just not quite like yourself. You might have considered counselling, but something’s holding you back.
What do I even say? Will it be awkward? Do I need to have a big problem to go?
The short answer? No, you don’t. And yes — it’s completely normal to feel unsure before your first session.
What Happens in a Counselling Session?

Counselling isn’t about having all the answers. It’s often the place you come to find them.
When we sit down together, there’s no pressure to perform or explain everything perfectly. You talk, I listen, and together we figure out what’s going on — at your pace, in your words. My approach is integrative, which means we tailor each session to you, rather than fitting you into a one-size-fits-all method.
Sometimes we explore emotions that feel stuck or overwhelming. Other times, it’s just about being heard, accepted, and not having to hold it all together for once.
Do I Need to Be in Crisis?
Not at all. While I support people with anxiety, low mood, stress, grief, and other difficult emotions, you don’t need to wait until things are unbearable.
Many people come to counselling because they feel something isn’t quite right — even if they can’t put it into words yet. That’s OK. Counselling can be preventative, grounding, and simply a space to breathe.
I’m Not Great at Talking About My Feelings…
Honestly? Most people aren’t. That’s one of the most common things I hear.
You don’t have to be “good at talking” to come to counselling. You don’t even need to know where to start.
That’s part of the work — and we do it together.
