Choosing to begin couples counselling can feel like a big step.
Many couples wonder whether counselling is the right decision, whether the counsellor will understand them, or even whether someone will take sides.
That’s why finding the right therapist matters.
I’m delighted to welcome Fran to Summit Counselling and Psychotherapy. Fran brings over 15 years of counselling experience, with a particular passion for helping couples navigate the challenges that relationships inevitably face
Every relationship has its own story
No two relationships are the same.
Some couples come to counselling because communication has broken down. Others are recovering from a betrayal, adjusting to becoming parents, struggling with conflict, or simply feeling disconnected from one another.
Often, people tell me they don’t want their relationship to end. They just don’t know how to find their way back to each other.
This is where Fran’s approach stands out.
Rather than deciding who’s right or wrong, Fran believes that the couple are the experts in their own relationship.
His role is to provide a calm, supportive environment where both people feel safe enough to speak honestly, listen differently, and begin understanding each other’s experiences in a new way.

A person-centred approach to couples counselling
At the heart of Fran’s work is Person Centred Counselling, developed by Carl Rogers.
This approach is based on a simple but powerful belief: people are more likely to grow and make meaningful changes when they feel genuinely accepted, understood, and listened to without judgement.
For couples, this means creating a space where both partners can express themselves openly without feeling criticised or blamed.
When people feel heard, conversations often become less defensive and more productive.
Many couples tell us this is the first time in a long time they’ve truly listened to one another.

Combining experience with evidence-based approaches
While Person Centred Counselling forms the foundation of Fran’s work, he also draws upon a range of well-established therapeutic approaches where appropriate.
These include:
The Gottman Method
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Psychodynamic Therapy
EMDR
Rather than following a rigid structure, Fran uses these approaches thoughtfully, tailoring sessions to the unique needs of each couple.
The goal is always the same: helping couples understand what’s happening in their relationship and supporting them as they move forward together.

Why people choose couples counselling
There doesn’t have to be a crisis before seeking support.
Many couples attend counselling because they want to strengthen their relationship before problems become overwhelming.
Others may be experiencing:
Communication difficulties
Frequent arguments
Emotional distance
Trust issues
Life transitions
Parenting challenges
Stress affecting the relationship
Feeling stuck in recurring patterns
Whatever brings you to counselling, having a dedicated space to slow down and talk can often make a significant difference.
